Resort Lowdown

The charming valley that runs through the traditional Alpine villages of Serre Chevalier is a lesser travelled road for many UK Winter tourists but those that open their horizons often fall in love, returning again and again.

The main town of the resort is Briancon (1200m), a fortified 17th century town so rich in beauty and history that it has been classed as a World Heritage Site, the small walkways and artisanal shops are perfect to wander around after a day on the slopes. The other villages of the area are of equal charm and are connected by a regular free bus.

The higher than average tree line (2200m) of the area means there are forest lined runs a plenty, making for fantastic conditions even when the weather closes in.

All levels of rider will love the variety of terrain on offer in the resort and many will find the natural features in and around the pistes make a great snow park defined by imagination and bravery.

The resort as a whole is very well organised allowing visitors to simply turn up and enjoy, perfect for those looking for a stress free winter break.

  • The Serre Chevalier Valley treats its visitors to an unforgettable holiday, where the high tree lined pistes flow into the historical beauty of the Alpine towns towns below.

The SKI Area

The ski area of Serre Chevalier stems from its lowest point in Briancon to the highest peak of 2800m and boasts 250km of ridable piste with a variety of slopes for all levels, packed with natural terrain as well as freestyle parks and slalom courses.

The resort has a snow guarantee as they have installed one of the largest snow making facilities in Europe not only topping up old snow but providing a great base all winter long.

Bars and restaurants line many slopes serving traditional cuisine along with snacks and beverages, perfect for that 3 o’clock apres tipple and there are also many ski/ snowboard schools to choose from with friendly, bilingual instructors.

Those new to the sport can buy reduced area passes, allowing them to save money, these passes cover some great green and blue slopes which are perfect for perfecting your technique before tackling the great selection of advanced slopes further up the hill.

When To Go To Serre Chevalier?

OPW recommends heading to “Serre Cher” in January when there is almost no crowds and a high potential for lots of snow fall, with the high altitude trees it’s a great place to ride powder especially when the weather closes in.

Spring is also incredible in the area with lots of sun and a variety of snow conditions depending on the altitude.

Must Do Runs at Serre Chevalier

The red Corvaria run is perfect for those who like to mix piste with tree runs, at a perfect pitch it allows you to nip off the sides into the well spaced larch forest. Go straight here after snowfalls for some epic conditions.

The Town

The local area is of historical importance dating back to Roman times and there is no lack of sightseeing for those looking for a resort with more than just skiing.

High fortified walls, small cobbled lanes and ancient streets lined with a range of shops and amenities give the town of Briancon the nickname of “'La Ville d'Art et d'Histoire” (The town of art and history).

All villages in the valley are linked by frequent and free shuttle bus that runs until night time, allowing visitors many options than just the closest restaurant.

For those looking to relax and unwind there is a great choice of wellbeing centres, spas and and aquatic centre with a range of facilities such as a swimming pool, sauna and steam room.

At nighttime the resort lights up with a host of free animations provided by the town, with torch lit descents, fireworks and theatrics a plenty there is never a dull moment in the beautiful valley.
